South Africa’s Leandra Smeda destroyed the cup dreams of a nation by scoring a late 90th minute goal against the Mighty Warriors. The defending champions had fought hard to keep their title from a determined Banyana Banyana side but to no avail.
The first goal came from Banyana Banyana Chrestina Kgatlana on the 45th minute ,but was cancelled out by Mighty Warrior Rutendo Makore on the 75th minute and marking her 10th goal of the tournament. Extra time looked imminent , however Smeda popped up with a late winner, to silence a vociferous Barbourfields, which was rooting for a home side win. This wasn’t the first final that the two power houses have met , 2011 the last time the championship was held , Zimbabwe took the win over Banyana Banyana to win the title in the final.\
Mighty Warriors coach, Sithethelelwe Sibanda said: “It was a great game. We started off shaky, but came back stronger in the second half. We need to get our players involved in these international matches to improve their mental strength.”
Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis said: “Zimbabwe played with a lot of fear in the first half and we capitalised on that. It was a fantastic game.”
