Chanel le19M, the Maison’s dedicated craftsmanship hub, will bring a captivating three-month international program to Dakar, Senegal. This initiative follows Chanel’s recent presentation of its Métiers d’Art collection in the vibrant capital city.

Le19M recognizes Senegal’s rich tapestry of artisanal expertise, a heritage deeply valued by the Maison.Le19M is partnering with the Institut fondamental d’Afrique noire (IFAN) to transform the esteemed Musée Théodore-Monod d’art africain into an off-site gallery, which will house the program.

Celebrating Senegalese Craftsmanship: Sur le Fil

The exhibition, titled “Sur le fil” (On the thread), weaves a captivating narrative that celebrates the richness and diversity of Senegalese embroidery and weaving crafts. It seamlessly intertwines these traditional crafts with other artistic disciplines, such as painting, photography, and installation, showcasing the remarkable creative wealth of the nation and the profound humanistic values embedded within its arts and crafts traditions.

“Sur le fil” will feature a diverse array of works and installations created by contemporary artists who work with textiles. Notably, some of these artists have collaborated closely with le19M’s renowned Maisons d’art.

    Creativity in Senegal

Furthermore, the exhibition will be a dynamic space where craftsmanship comes alive. Dozens of skilled artisans will be on-site, producing new works before the eyes of the audience, while guest artists will lead engaging participatory workshops. These interactive elements will further enrich the visitor experience and provide valuable opportunities for learning and engagement.

Empowering Communities and Inspiring Future Generations

This ambitious project aims to achieve several key objectives. Primarily, it seeks to showcase the invaluable artisanal skills that have been passed down through generations, reminding the world of their significance and beauty. By celebrating these crafts, le19M hopes to reassert their value and encourage their continued dissemination within Senegalese society.

Moreover, the program aims to inspire future generations. Through interactive workshops and engaging demonstrations, le19M hopes to spark vocations among young people, students, and the general public, fostering a renewed appreciation for craftsmanship and encouraging them to explore their own creative potential.

Ultimately, Chanel’s initiative in Dakar serves as a testament to the Maison’s commitment to preserving and promoting artisanal excellence. By collaborating with local communities and celebrating the unique cultural heritage of Senegal, le19M demonstrates its dedication to nurturing creativity and supporting the next generation of artisans.
