In an effort to improve healthcare and address the issue of professional migration from Africa, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is seeking applications from Somali diaspora for the role of Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialist at Burao Regional Hospital in Somaliland. This initiative is part of the MIDA FINNSOM Health Phase V Project, which is focused on leveraging the expertise of the Somali diaspora to enhance healthcare services, particularly in obstetrics and gynecology. The project aims to combat the ‘brain drain’ by encouraging skill and knowledge transfer to local health workers.

The specialist will be responsible for providing medical care in obstetrics and gynecology, mentoring medical staff, and improving healthcare delivery at the hospital. They will also help in training staff at lower-level facilities.

Applicants must have a medical degree with specialization in Obstetrics & Gynecology and at least five years of medical practice. Proficiency in English and Somali is required, and Arabic language skills are considered an advantage. The position offers a stipend based on qualifications and experience, health insurance, and a pre-service briefing. The safety of the specialist will be ensured by the host institution.

Applications are open until January 21, 2024. This opportunity, funded by Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, represents a collaborative effort to bolster health services and mitigate the challenges posed by the migration of skilled professionals from Africa.
